Aeration, Power Raking, and Vacuuming FAQ

What is Aeration and why would it help my lawn?

If you've ever tried watering concrete, you know that it is so hard, no water, air, or nutrients can get in it. Your lawn can become hard too. Aeration removes a small "core" or "plug" from your lawn reducing soil density and softening your soil which allows water, nutrients, and air to enter into the soil.

What is Power Raking and why would it help my lawn?

In Canada, the frozen snow, ice, and cold temperatures causes the blades of grass to die, leaving only the roots alive. This dead layer of grass suffocates the new growth underneath, stopping it from grow through. As well, the thick dead layer acts as a shield preventing water, nutrients, and air from getting to the new grass. Power raking removes the dead layer which allows water, air and nutrients to get to the new grass. Typically we will remove approximately 1-2 fifty-pound bags of dead grass from the lawn.

What is Power Vacuuming?

Power raking is complimentary with any power raking services. After power raking, the layer of dead grass is sitting on top of the lawn. Power vacuuming sucks up all the dead grass and we haul it away to be composted. On an average lawn we will remove 1-2 fifty-pound bags of dead grass from the lawn.

Can I choose the day you come?

Green Man typically cuts grass on Wednesday, Thursday, and Fridays to ensure that your grass is at a nice manicured length for each weekend. We avoid cutting lawns on Mondays or Tuesdays as your grass will look long by the weekend if you are fertilizing properly.

Why would I mulch?

Besides fertilizing and watering, mulching is one of the best things you can do for your grass.  The layer of decomposing grass adds an abundance of nutrients back to the grass. Further it covers the dirt, preventing your water from evaporating. Lastly, it adds natural cushion to your lawn bring you closer to the carpet like feel we all want.

What is mulching?

Mulching is when the grass is shredded into tiny pieces by the lawn mower which then falls down beneath the grass to decompose.

Are there any negatives to mulching?

Mulching should not be done in a couple of situations. First, if you are not cutting every week. If the grass is long when it is cut, the chopped up pieces don't get small enough. Second situation, you have lots of weeds. When you mulch, the weed and the seeds are put back in the grass. At Green Man, we always bag in spring when weeds are out in full force but if you have weeds all year long, then you shouldn't mulch.
